Apostle Paul & Aristotle -- Silver Obol -- Assos, Troas, c. 479 - 450 B.C.

After visiting Alexandria Troas, the Apostle Paul visited Assos by foot (Acts 20:13).

Much earlier -- about four and a half centuries earlier, Aristotle -- Plato's most famous student, while Plato was Socrates' most famous student -- was invited to Assos and spent over three years living and teaching here.

The acropolis of Assos is 238 meters above sea-level, and the Temple of Athena was constructed on this site in the 6th century B.C.

Silver obol, BMC Troas p. 36, 3; Weber 5318; Klein - ; Rosen -; SNG von Aulock -, SNG Cop -, VF, 0.569g, 9.3mm, 0o, Assos mint, obverse griffin right; reverse head of roaring lion right within incuse square.
